Looking for some Dark Jazz songs?

Looking for some good Jazz artists/songs?

  • Im looking for good artists or songs to download. I like upbeat jazz with lots of percussion and some horns. Is this a certain style? Any info would help! Thanks

  • Answer:

If you're into different beats check out Dave Brubecks "Time Signatures". As for percussion, try drummers (Max Roach, Buddy Rich, Jimmy Cobb) or possibly xylophone/vibraophone players (Lionel Hampton, Stefon Harris, Milt Jackson).

Miles Davis. Sketches of Spain and Some Kind of Blue. On Some Kind of Blue, be sure to get the new remastered version done with the correct master tape speed. The original vinyl was done with a capstan which sped up the track a little, just enough that it was impossible to keep time with the music. The new digital remaster I recently got corrected the speed back to the original and that made it SO much better than the original vinyl pressing. I do not know that you would think these two pressings as upbeat and there isn't all that much percussion, but these two albums don't NEED percussion, but I find them haunting and I listen to them both over and over... Use the profile link and send me an email address where I can contact you directly and maybe it might be possible for you to get copies of what I enjoy, maybe. Providing copies is a copyright violation and I do not break the law, but I just might know someone who does... But, as I said, no guarantees since technically, it is against the law to distribute copies of copyrighted materials...

Check into Wayne Shorter.. Wayne Shorter's album Night Dreamer.. Juju.. and Speak No Evil.. I've been listening to Shorter for a few months and have really grown to like his stuff.. Charlie Parker also is really good.. The Washington Concerts.. is a good album.. Recently I've started to listen to Bud Powell.. which I like.. also Miles Davis Kind Of Blue.. and Birth Of The Cool.. And as one already mentioned.. you might want to check into Art Blakey.. Art Blakey's album Moanin.. I got earlier this year.. and just bought A Night In Tunisia and Free For All..

Try the Brecker Brothers, or either of their individual stuff (Michael and/or Randy Brecker). They're both amazing.

I think that you are searching for "bebop". Bebop was first created by Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet) and Charlie "Bird" Parker (alto sax), back in the 1940's. Max Roach was on drums. Also, try the drummer, Art Blakey. Start with his album called, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Moanin'. I am pretty sure these suggestions are what you are trying to describe.

If you're looking for a more contemporary artist, you might like Michael Buble. Especially the song "It had better be tonight" may be interesting for you.
