i would recommend that you listen to your local jazz radio station, or internet jazz radio stations. you'll get a wide variety of jazz and you can learn what the songs are and who does them, and explore from there.

Here's a suggestion: Go out and buy Ken Burns' Jazz - The Story of America's Music. This is a 5-CD box set that contains everyone from Satchmo to Duke to Lady Day, Ella, Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy, Brubeck, Miles, Herbie Hancock, Weather Report and Wynton Marsalis. This is the best introduction to jazz that I know of and it beats trying to buy all these artists and songs separately.

Of course, I would always say that "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis is the all-time classic and perfect jazz album. That being said, without repeating what the others have already given you, in addition to the famous jazz artists and the "classics", there are a lot of newer jazz artists who will go down in history as "classics" and I highly recommend you check them out. Here is a list of my favorite older classics and also some new tunes from artists who I think are right up there with the famous older artists. "Basically Blues" from the CD:"Buddy Rich Swingin' New Big Band" "Killer Joe" from the CD "Walking in Space" by Quincy Jones big band "Stolen Moments" from the CD: "The Blues and the Abstract Truth" by Oliver Nelson "Organ Grinder's Swing" from the CD "Jimmy Smith's Finest Hour" by Jimmy Smith "Summertime" from the CD "Gershwin's World" by Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell "Phase Dance" from the CD: "The Pat Metheny Group" "Giant Steps" and "Freedom Jazz Dance" from the CD: "Lucky To Be Me" by Taylor Eigsti "Jammin'" from the CD: "Around the City" by Eliane Elias "Empress Afternoon" from the CD: "Life On Earth" by Renee Rosnes "Swunk" from the CD:"Is What It Is" by Mike Stern "Blue In Green" from the CD: "Heaven and Earth" by Al Jarreau "New York State of Mind" from the CD: "The Best of Diane Shuur" "Stolen Moments" and "All Blues" from the CD: "NYV" by the group New York Voices "Boomerang" from the CD: "Iguana" by Ray Obiedo "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs" from the CD by the same name by Chick Corea The entire album "Light As A Feather" by Chick Corea "Samba Song", "Friends", " and "Sicily" from the CD: "Friends" by Chick Corea I came back to add some stuff: If you really like Chick Corea (I think I have everything he ever recorded), try the following: "Tones For Joan's Bones/Mountain in the CLouds" by Chick Corea and Miroslav Vitous (two albums put together). Entire CD. "Lifescape", "Jammin E. Cricket", "Free Step" on the CD: "Beneath the Mask, by Chick Corea Electric Band The entire CDs: "My Spanish Heart" and "Romantic Warrior" by Chick Corea - Return To Forever
