As someone who is about to graduate from an MBA program and who hasn't secured an internship, what types of jobs are available to me right out of school?
-
I am an MBA student who is about to graduate. I am graduating from a smaller Midwestern college (Northwest Missouri State University). I got a 94 percentile on the Major Field Test, and I think I'm hovering around a 3.2 GPA. Here are my questions: I was just wondering what types jobs I should go for first? I live in a suburb of a major city (I moved to Oklahoma City), and I am intending to find a job. What types of jobs are good for MBA grads that I have a reasonable chance of getting? Some of my friends are "Business analysts" but I don't know if that is a good choice for me. Is it even remotely possible for me to do independent consulting right out of grad school? Or do I have to get work experience first? How bad will it hurt me that I haven't had an internship yet? Should I try and get one? Or should I just shoot for a job?

I was asked to answer this question, although I feel like I don't have enough information to offer more than just "a perspective". On #1 regarding what types of jobs should you look for first after getting an MBA with approx. a 3.2 GPA. These things may not be enough to distinguish you very much. Probably a better guide would be thinking about what you gravitate towards or like, what is available where you want to live, etc. Consider thinking about your values, then look at how your skills and credentials might fit. This perspective probably applies regardless of degree or GPA. On #2 regarding independent consulting, I wouldn't recommend this right out of school unless you have a clear path to finding clients and some sense of how you will deliver and continue to get new business. And these two items are just for starters. On #3 about not having an internship, if you are graduating, what purpose would an internship serve? Maybe I'm missing something, however, an internship usually means a temporary 3-month thing in between academic years. Is there another flavor of internship you are thinking of? My $0.02. Good luck!

An MBA is a very general sort of degree. It really depends on your prior experience and competencies. What do you want to do? Sometimes you just have to make it happen. Networking is probably the biggest most import skill that will help you in finding a job. There's no secret formula. Don't wait for companies to come to you with Job offers. Be proactive and put yourself out there. Decide where you want to end up. Find companies that do those things you want to do, and contact them. Tell them what you can do and how you can help them.

There is a great tool that I have used for MBA's called the Career-Leader http://www.careerleader.com/. You may find it useful to help you pinpoint where your interests specifically lay within the business world. It assesses your interests and skills and suggests roles and types of organizations that would be a good match. If you do not have any or much previous business experience in this economy there is a good chance you will be targeting the same jobs undergrad bus students targetĀ - but you should be able to accelerate your career faster once you get the opportunities (if you do a good job). It is very difficult to get any independent consulting jobs (ones that pays anyway) right out of school. On the other hand, if you are willing to travel and be flexible you might find an entry level management consulting support role with an organization (but you will have to network hard, try your schools alumni as a place to begin). If you have no internships or co-ops then go create them. Fine a not-for-profit or small business and offer to do something (based on interests - a competitive analysis, marketing plan, management review). These can be short term - 3 months but they are something. You may find that contract and contingent work is the way to start out keep in mind what you can and want to do and go offer it. It takes time but if you work the process of figuring out what you want to do and for whom and then start building in that direction it usually comes together.

Thanks for the A2A, David. You haven't shared details of your pre-MBA work experience or your longer term aspirations. So pardon me if this sounds too generic. The good news first. You don't actually need an internship to get a job. Of course, having one makes it relatively easier to convert into a full-time offer. There are many bschools outside the US that offer shorter MBA programs and they don't have an internship option. Their students still manage to get good jobs, several manage a complete career change as well. Now the bigger question. What jobs can you target? During your application phase, your bschool would've asked you to submit essays covering your accomplishments and goals. You could take that goal as the starting point and think about whether you are still keen on getting into the industry/role you mentioned 2 years back. That should provide some focus. It's a tough economy and graduates from the best schools are also struggling to get what they want. So balancing the focus part with a little flexibility will go a long way. Good luck with the job hunt, buddy!
