What are some beautiful songs on the piano? For a beginner?
-
So I am teaching myself how to play the piano, and I need a little help on the song choices. So I was wondering if anyone knew of any good songs to learn for beginners. Please and ...show more

Answer:
The first thing I would tell a beginner is that pieces of music for solo piano are not "songs." [Songs are vocal pieces]. The second thing is that the odds of successfully self tutoring classical piano are extremely low. So I'd find a teacher.

I think moonlight sonata would be perfect, it's very basic. I learned to play it when I was 8. Or you could learn "My hear will go on" form titanic. An easy version of Canon in D would be good too.

Worry about beautiful a bit later. First you need the very basics. Even if you've played a non-keyboard instrument or learned to read and sing, the two clefs, reading them at once, coordinating hands, rhythms, etc. is a lot to take on, especially if you are learning on your own. I do recommend, first and always, a teacher, because there is a lot which can be learned wrong, and what you do learn correctly can take ten times as long compared to structured and paced lessons with a teacher. You are a beginner: Fur Elise, Moonlight Sonata and a host of other repertoire is not for you now, but later. Bartok, Microkosmos, Books I and II, will take you step by step from the most basic (hands together right away) and you can progress quickly through them. They are famous for being still about the best beginner books there are, musical, well-structured for any beginner of any age to learn from. Then there are anthology collections of pieces at beginners level, some have original classical pieces which are not simplified. I recommend those too. The music is not at all 'dumbed down.' You are playing real pieces as they were written, and you are not playing uninteresting pieces written for children with condescending titles like 'Butterflies,' etc. There is a very well-known collection of Bach, in the Schirmer edition, none simplified but all relatively simple, called "Beginners Bach." The other collection, straight from Bach, is the "Notebook for Anna Magdalena," written for early piano instruction (the Schirmer edition is mainly this material with a few additional pieces by Bach's sons.) Follows, by difficulty but still for the early stages of learning, Robert Schumann's "Album für die Jugend," a collection of very nice short pieces. There are also the Prokofiev "Music for Children" and his "Visions Fugitives," the last a collection of about 20 very short pieces, some of which should soon be within your ability to play. Another set of pieces I was given a few of within the first year of lessons (age six) was the Octavio Pinto "Scenas Infantis" (Scenes from Childhood.) That should certainly be enough to start you off with. I still urge you to get a teacher, or if that is not possible at least seek out someone local who is well-advanced who might be willing to 'watch over you' a bit. There is no substitution (on-line, books, etc.) for a one-on-one relationship when you are learning a skill. Best regards.

First you need to find out your level of skill and pull out different pieces to try to site read.If you are able to sight read well, and can read the music, try finding some music from clementi,or other big named composers,or look at music from the romantic period. One popular piece is 'Music of the Night',from Phantom of the Opera, and can be arranged in many different skill levels.Other music can be arranged to be easier as well, but this piece is easy as well as keeping a good melody. If you haven't heard this piece,go to the link below.there may be easier versions than this out there, this was just an easy to find video.
