Do you have any sightreading tips?

I play trumpet. I'm normally pretty good at sightreading but when I'm nervous I suddenly go from perfect pitch to tone deaf. How can I stop this from happening?

Answer:
Most important: Look for time signature, key signature, tempo, and style/ articulation Try to have good sound. Always play confidently! If you mess up, they will hear it whether you are piano or forte, so at least sound confident with good tone. You might also want to take a slightly slower tempo than what is intended. Good luck! You'll do fine : )

The only way to deal with nerves that interfere with your performance is to know your instrument so well, to have all your technique so programmed into your subconscious mind / memory that *nothing* interferes.......your breath does not become shallow, your knees stay in place, your mouth does not go dry, your hands do not shake, and you don't knock over your music stand !!! Your problem does not seem to be with your sight reading, but with your "nerves" which are actually just a rush of adrenalin that comes with being on the spot, that comes because you need the extra energy to perform. You just are not accustomed to handling the adrenalin rushing through your system, that is all, and it knocks you over. It is almost like a dizzy spell, isn't it? Always in performing, we remain on that high, and stay there until after the performance is over; that itself is a separate matter: "coming down" after a performance. By sight reading, you mean reading off a piece of music you have never seen before, and therefore you are not familiar with it, much less have it memorized ... do you not? It sounds to me that you are easily flustered. That means that you need to be tougher, my dear. Just decide that come H*** or High Water, you are going to do what you need to do and you will not tolerate yourself being nervous. You did not say what it is that makes you nervous, but ... there are some times when you just need to get on with it. Even great performers are a little nervous. You too have to become accustomed to it. It is not going to go away. You just have to realize that it happens to others, it is perfectly normal, it is just the extra rush of adrenalin that goes with being on the spot, you have something to do and hey .... to h*** with being "nervous" !! You can't let that interfere with you. P.S. If I think something is going to make me "nervous", in such a way that it interferes with my performance, I don't do it. I hope you can afford yourself that luxury. It means that you know you are not going to be able to do it to your owh satisfaction. You have a right to make that decision, and to protect yourself from disappointment, and an unpleasant memory.

confidence is a necessity while sight reading. really try to get "in" the song. you'll be soo into it that you won't even have to think twice about what you're doing

I think that you should try to keep looking at your music, maybe you won't feel so nervous and won't lose your pitch.

I had the same problem that you're having. The thing that got me over it was sightreading in front of people...particularly people who will be honest with you. I even played in front of friends and family as I found that playing for people you know is even harder than playing for those you don't. If you can master that...you can master anything!

Perhaps the problem is not so much on the sight reading itself, but your findermental of trumpet playing. Your nerves might have disturbed how you normally play amd listen. My suggestion of to be better prepared with the piece you are working on and work more on your tone production and breath control. It all goes hand in hand.

Take a different attitude.First know you are going to fail the sight reading section, this lightens your expectations.Somehow this makes you feel stronger as you have nothing to lose. Second-I know a lot of musicians that take auditions and they are well aware how nervous students can be and how this reflects in their playing-they were nervous too!
