Hadoc the priest, And thus spake Zaphania, tocata and fuge in d minor (bach) anything by Tomaso Albinoni, especially music for organ and violin, which must be the most beautiful piece of music and very haunting. You could also ask your local library for Classic FM CD too.

Here's what you do: First start off with the major composers: Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Bach, Wagner etc. Second: Start to look for other composers like Rachmaninoff, Brahms, Marin, etc. Third: Find great recordings of all of them. Forth: Get into operas (Verdi, Monteverdi, Wagner, Caruso, Callas, etc.) Fifth: Build your collection. You're done. But you'll find new pieces every day. It's funny, I usually think I've listened to a lot of classical music then I find a new piece once in a while. Classical music is infinite.

My advice: go for the things that give you goose flesh. You may find out about the basic repertoire at www.clssical.net. www.classiccat.net lists heaps of references to free resources. Naxos has also a remarkable list of standard repertoire and allows you to listen the the beginning of each track (which is enough to give you an idea, if you want to go on.) My personal list includes: Monteverdi: Vespero della Beata Vergine Delius: Florida Suite Wagner: Wotan's Farewell and Magic Fire (from Walküre) Fauré: Requiem Beethoven: Phantasie for piano, chorus and orchestra (op. 72) Shostakovich: Symph. #15 Rossini: Guillaume Tell Moussorgski: Boris Godunov

Ahh, I love classical music. I'm glad that you're deciding to take a break from all that trash out there that they call "music" and sink into the good stuff, haha. Let's see...I personally like Beethoven's 5th and 9th Symphonies...filled with emotion and very mature, musically. Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite is nice as well, if you like the beautiful, yet eerie sound. Another composer like that is Danny Elfman, who is my favorite. He composes music for a lot of movies like The Incredible Hulk, Spiderman, Batman, The Simpsons Movie, MIB, and almost anything by Tim Burton. His music is absolutely wonderfully and it really gets the blood flowing. He also sings as Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas and Bonejangles in Corpse Bride. He has a wonderful voice, and has even composed pieces outside of the film business. Rhapsody in Blue is a fun piece, by George Gershwin...it's technically classical, but it sounds very jazzy. I especially love the clarinet solo in the beginning. Shostakovich, Stravinsky, and Schumann are great as well. Of course, Mozart and Bach. Seriously, if you listen to the scores or soundtracks of a lot of movies and musicals, you'll realize how amazing that stuff is, too. It's usually classical, but it consists of all different genres of music. Look in Disney movies, The Phantom of the Opera, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc.

My most favorite music is Pachelbel's Cannon.

I'm sure you'll appreciate that classical music is too wide a subject to be adequately covered in a simple answer. My advice is to get the paperback "The NPR Guide to building a Classical CD Collection." by Ted Libbey. It will tell you pretty much anything you want to know for starters. After that you can strike out on your own!

It's not "classical" but shoud be; "Victor's Solo" from "The Corpse Bride".
