Marriage of figaro overture, 1812 overture, barber of seville?

  • what are some other really good classical pieces like the marriage of figaro overture, 1812 overture, and the barber of seville. like upbeat exciting ones like these

  • Answer:

Lots of great answers up there... some of my favorites. All of the pieces you've mentioned are relatively short (~15-20 minutes tops). Are you looking for similarly short works, or will full symphonies work for you? Here are some more ideas (hope I'm not duplicating) Saint-Saens' Symphony No. 3 "Organ" -- My favorite work of all time -- it's all over the place, fun, crazy, LOUD (the last two movements at least). I love it. Rodeo by Copland Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin (not quite so upbeat, but still fun) "A Lincolnshire Posy" by Percy Grainger (an English-Aussie composer who doesn't get much play, but is totally fun! Some slow parts in the piece I've named, but at least half of the movements are really fun and crazy) Jupiter from The Planets by Holst Most of Carmina Burana (not just O Fortuna--that's intense but there are many other playful movements too) Just about any fourth movement from any of Tchaikovsky's symphonies. (He was the Back Street Boys of the romantic period, I think... very accessible.) Ah, for more overtures, try Bernstein's 'Candide' overture. Super fun.

My favorite will always be Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. It is thrilling from beginning to end. Lots of surprise sounds and pure genius. It all leads to the last when the chorale sings the song we will find in many hymn books called "Joyful Joyful, We Adore Thee." You must hear it from the original version to appreciate its intense beauty.
