Imagine a 1960's black power movement that happened to find a menorah and the story of hanuka. Basically they took the tradition, (lighting a candle every night) and then took african words that where popular at the time and multi colored candles and designated each candle for one of these words.

Well, the origin is a little complicated, but I'll try. Some years back, a couple of black dudes stole a menorah, which contains pockets for nine candles, and in their hurry to get away and not get caught, the one carrying the menorah fell, and broke off a couple of the candle pockets. Now, since this thing was broken, and useless to try and sell, and not wanting their efforts to go to waste, they invented the holiday of Kwanza, where they did not need the whole menorah intact and could make good use of the remaining part. So it began, and continues to this day.
