Is kwanzaa a religious celebration?

What exactly is Kwanzaa? Is this a celebration evolved from these crazy politically correct days we live in?

  • The African Americans I know seem just as confused as I am about what Kwanzaa is. Who celebrates this? Do certain religions celebrate it? It seems to have come out of no where.

    It did come out of nowhere. It was originally started in 1966 from a man that was a convicted felon, who started the holiday to promote unity with africans everywhere. 5 years after he made up the holiday he was convicted of torturing two black women for stripping them naked, beating them with electrical cords and even made them drink detergent. Whether you like the holiday or not, I personally find it repulsive that someone that wanted to "bring together" a group of people would do such a thing to the group he wanted to bring together. And the even more repulsive thing about it is that people actually praise the holiday and say its the best thing ever.

The African Americans that I know (myself included) all feel that kwanzaa is heathen propaganda with a sole purpose of diminishing the truth of Christmas from the Creator God. Why would anyone start a new ''holiday'' from Dec 24 til Jan 1???? Be careful what you fall for. God is watching YOU...

This is another one of those things where they want to take away the fact of Christ's birth even if he was not born on this day this is a day to celebrate the fact he WAS born that why it's Christmas and not Kwanzaa , and yes I'm suppose to be African American but I'm just a American that celebrate Christmas , the day for my lord. and for all those politically correct people I'm Indian Irish African American

Let me first say that I am not African American. Now, what I have never understood is why a holiday celebrating African-American unity is celebrated between Christmas and New Year's. Wouldn't the week of MLK day or during Black Heritage month have made more sense? Not being sarcastic, the question is meant sincerely. That being said I knew a family who celebrated Christmas in the religious sense but saved the gift giving for Kwanzaa. At Christmas, they gave to others: Angel tree, etc. I thought that was cool.

Kwanzaa if a beautiful holiday. And just for your information it didn't just come out of nowhere. It has been around for a long time. What makes it so special is that the people who celebrate it give out hand made gifts. Unlike those who at Christmas go crazy buying expensive and outragious things like a Nintendo Wii. Don't get me wrong I love Christmas. I just feel like people have forgotten the whole meaning. Although the gifts are nice that's not what's its about. Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ not who has the most up to date form of technology or a new car.

It is a very cool holiday regardless where it came from. The gifts given are Hand Made especially for the receiver and not some commercially bought thing. That's why I like it so much. I am not of African decent but I celebrate it with my friends who are not all of African decent either.
