The Indian Independence Day marks the anniversary of the date that India gained her independence from the British crown.

panti-slave2006

August 15, 2006 is the 59th anniversary of the day the Indian Independence Act went into effect. The British began taking over India in the late 1700s, and on this day, they formally transferred power to Indian nationals. The celebration is for that. Gandhi was the only powerful Indian leader who wanted a united India. The others refused to agree, and it looked like the whole quest for independence would become bogged down with endless political negotiations while civil wars raged. The only answer the majority of leaders could agree with, was to provide independent control for both Muslims and Hindus by immediately dividing the land & creating Pakistan and India. The separation of other countries (e.g. Bangladesh) out of the original boundaries, came later.
