Are there any famous quotes on why we celebrate the fourth of July?

Why do SOMEof my white co-workers question why i don't celebrate the 4th of july?

  • Answer:

SOME of them might be republican. But the declaration of independence, july 4, has nothing to do with slaves or indians. It actually has to do with America becoming it's own nation splitting from British rule which starts the American Revolution.

IF you are an American, it is your history too. I don't like everything that America has done, but it still is my history. NO ONE gets to pick and choose what their history is, not even you. But, yes, it is ridiculous for people to question how, when or why you celebrate anything. The whole point of July 4th is to celebrate freedom!

It was actually 3/5 but i see were your coming from. I agree with you 100% but heres a few reasons why they don't get it. The declaration was made and signed in Philly and at that time the north had barely any slavery(but the south had a lot i no). The declaration was one of the reasons the civil war happened. It was building up over some many years but the south thought it was in favor of the north. I'm not in anyway questioning your beliefs because that's all up to you.

sorry I do not celebrate the 4th either but then as a Brit really am in no rush to celebrate us getting our butts kicked. the thing is whilst you have a valid point, surely you are just playing into a stereotype here, and got to ask do you celebrate Christmas and the such or does that also offend? surely you can rejoice in the fact that none of those now apply to you or your children and that alone is a good reason for you to celebrate..............mind you I think its odd that a day of remembrance for the fallen men and women is basically a beer fest............so NOT like that back in the UK, we actually remember them in many ways, not usually with a beer and burger in our hands. regards

It's a lot like Australia Day. Nothing in it for indigenous people here.

Strong opinion. You made your point. I don't particularly like the expense of spending tax dollars to burn when the money could be used for - in my opinion - better causes.

I can understand your position but tend to agree with one of the later posters on here. It ain't perfect but it can be improved.

most people do celebrate it, but its for most its just another excuse to party and see fireworks. traditons. so when somebody who doesnt, the first instinct is to question because they're so used to doing it. and white peole are not the only people that celebrate it. loosen up its just an american tradition. i understand where you come from however its your history too. just because you weren't on the better side of things, you're still free today... better late then never.

Getting the day off from work is reason enough for celebrating. If you celebrate the fourth people will quit asking. Nobody thinks to ask what you are celebrating or why, so celebrate for any reason you like even if it is only that you aren't working that day.
