Take a look at www.themitzvahbowl.com and click on the 'animals' category for more ideas. http://www.themitzvahbowl.com/?s=animals&cat=0&x=0&y=0 You can support animal shelters in a variety of other ways. Read about how other 12-13 year olds have worked with animals for their mitzvah project. We hope you'll be inspired by one of their stories. Email [email protected] for more advice!

I had my bat mitzvah last year, and for my project I read to kids and volunteered at my local library. It was very easy and I could come whenever I wanted. Also, if you like animals you could do what my friend did and work at an animal shelter. Having a bat mitzvah may seem like a drag now, but looking back on it, it was totally worth it. Good luck! (:

I wrote a blog post about green mitzvah projects a little while back. It may be useful to you since I also go through the recommended steps a Bat Mitzvah should take in deciding how to choose a good mitzvah project. The post: http://blog.vendorbar.com/2010/04/its-easy-being-green-barbat-mitzvah.html For charity projects in your area, you may want to look at www.iparticipate.org or www.volunteermatch.org to see if there are any charity opportunities in your area that allow younger participants. VolunteerMatch does write whether the opportunity is good for kids and teens so you may want to start there. Hope this helps, Sara Owner, VendorBar.com

Here's a pretty easy, but still useful idea: read stories on a regular basis at a nearby daycare center, pre-school or kindergarten. Go there at least once or twice a month to the same group of kids, sharing the gift of reading with them. It should be pretty easy to arrange, and only requires that you go to the public library on a regular basis and select books that the kids would like--probably the same books you enjoyed hearing when you were little.
