Answer:
Chanukah is about the miracle of the weak against the strong, the miracle of the oil, the prevailing of spiritual values against the physical values that Greece epitomized. It is a celebration of being able to relate to Gd in our way, and not nkeel down to rulers who want to strip every vestige of Gd from daily life. Chanukah is not about public celebration. In fact, we commemorate the holiday with one "decoration": a menorah in the window to publicize the miracle. That's it. In the family we play games with the dreidle, a small 4-sided top, which is more than just a children's game. Traditional gifts consisted of "gelt" (money in Yiddish), some coins. We eat foods that are fried in oil, latkes (potato pancakes) and doughnuts (sufganiot in Hebrew). We add special prayers to the daily service and the after-meal blessings. That's all. It is small, personal, in the family, not public. Chanukah just happens to come out at the same time of year as Xmas. Period, end. What has happened to Chanukah is the commercialization of Xmas. The decorations are not us. Chanukah cards are not traditional. The glitz and glamor of Xmas is not Jewish. I don't need Chanukah decorations at the mall to remind me of "the season." It is no season. It is 8 days that I remember the miracle, and try to add a little light to the world. So I don't lament the lack of public decor. I don't send cards. Yes, I call friends and family. But mostly, I get home from work in time to light the candles, say the blessings, sing a few Chanukah songs, and watch my candles glow. While I feel sad that most Jews don't know the meaning of Chanukah, I feel happy you asked such a good question. Happy Chanukah! Good websites are cited below:

It is something that, unfortunately, comes with the territory of being a minority. But to be quite honest, being wished a "merry x-mas" really doesn't annoy me too much. I just feel a little awkward sometimes. But deep down I know that these x-mas greetings are really greetings of happiness and wellness. They really mean no harm, you know? It doesn't hurt too bad about not being wished a "happy chanukah" because it's really not that major of a holiday. It only is because card companies and stores want to sell you stuff for it. The only thing that annoys me though is that I'm trying to live my normal life and then there's a huge rush of people for x-mas! All I want to do is buy diapers for my kid and I gotta wait in an hour long line?! Lol! Then all of sudden, the world completely shuts down on x-mas day. At least there's no traffic out on the roads!

The Jewish population in the US is only 1.7%. Sometimes in is not easy being a minority.

Look for signs of Hanukkah celebration. Most towns have them. You can even view a three-hour Hanukkah service with history etc on the Internet. Happy Hanukkah!

I wouldn't know being Christian and all. All I can say is to accept it in which the spirit its Given. And perhaps to instead of responding with A Merry Christmas answer back with a Thanks and a Happy Hanukkah to you! If they ask explain why educate them ! People aren't trying to be rude just and yes it can be frustrating on thier presumption but its only meant with good sentiment not to upset you and they equally shouldn't be offend

i'm not jewish but i am very close to a jewish family. Target surprisingly had hanukkah decorations and candles out this year. it shocked me but the hanukkah items were kinda hidden. hanukkah is a more personal family celebration compared to the OVER publicized christmas.
