Send a formal email and say: "I have finally decided to decline the offer for personal reasons. It will be better for my career to stay in my current company because I already made plans for myself. The goals that I have is more suited to where I am right now. I hope you understand. Thanks for considering me to be a member of your company." Then sign your name.

you call them back and say i have changed my mind i don't want the offer. it will be awkward for you and probably embarrassing, but remember that they don't know who you are from joe blow down the road, nothing to really be embarrassed about..Man up and take care of business. dont leave them hanging!!!

I assume you never signed anything if it was just verbal, so theres nothing to stop you from saying thanks but no thanks. Especially if they want you to work for a lower package that your wanting. It might prompt them to up their offer, unless there was another strong candidate who is willing to work for less. If you want to stay where you are then do so. If you did sign something then i suggest you read it carefully before declining though i doubt there will be anything stopping you from changing your mind.

You could always say you received a more attractive offer. That might get them to concede the package they originally turned down, but don't count on it. As long as you haven't signed a contract, you're still free to do what you want. Verbal agreements carry very little legal weight.

"I very much appreciate the opportunity to work for (insert company name), but i have decided to go in another direction." That should do it.

Just thank them for the offer and tell them that you are no longer interested in the job. If it would make you feel better tell them that you accepted another job offer. As long as you have not signed an actually contract you should be fine. Remember every one has the right to say no and they have the right to change their mind.

Might as well let them know you had a change in plans. What is there to feel sorry for? They can find someone else. Just call them, let them know whats up and keep it short.

Monica

Thank you for your offer, but things have changed and I will have to decline your offer.

Tell them! Don't avoid their calls. That would be rude. Just say "I'm sorry, but I've accepted another position."
