    The rabbit/hare/bunny is a sacred symbol of the goddess Eostre, for whom this holiday is named. She's a fertility goddess. This also explains the eggs (fertility symbols) and the basket (represents the womb in which new life is carried). Her holiday is called Ostara and falls on/around Easter every year. Pagan traditions much older than even Ostara and across many cultures around the world have observed this time of year and based it on the lunar calendar (just like Easter in modern times). It basically represents the resurrection of life after the long death of winter. If you're going to have a deity that rises from the dead and you seek converts for this deity, this is the perfect time to do it since it is such a very old tradition and so many potential converts celebrated this time of year anyway.
