What do you leave the Easter Bunny?

Why does the Easter Bunny leave eggs all around?

  • Aren't bunnies mammals. They don't lay eggs, they give natural birth, so why does the Easter Bunny leave eggs around?

  • Answer:

I have a funny picture of how it's done that would probably spoil your holiday. But in all seriousness, this is due to the original reason for the holiday. Easter was a pagan holiday that the Church coopted and dressed up with Christian imagery, which we partially ignore in the US. Originally Easter was a celebration of fertility. Eggs are a symbol of fertility (for obvious reasons), as are rabbits, so they were symbols for Easter. We had an egg hunt this morning, and like last year, I kept stealing eggs from my daughter's basket so she could find them again. Easter is awesome! Did anyone say peeps?

As a mythical character depicted as an anthropomorphic rabbit, the Easter Bunny seems to have its origins in Alsace and southwestern Germany. He was first mentioned in German writings in the 1600’s. The Easter Bunny brings baskets filled with colored eggs, candy and toys to good children the night before Easter. He is very similar in his traits to his winter counterpart, Santa Claus.
