its actually a crazy story of pagan origins. it turns out that there is a pagan godess of fertility named Eastre. and two of their symbols of fertility are the rabit and the egg!! /// my friend told me this story of how the rabit wanted to impress the godess so he brought her this egg/// i dont know about all that but it does seem to ahev pagan origins its a more of a symbolic thing for spring being the time of rebirth.

Just a but of fun really. Stories about pagan goddesses etc are just romantic nonsense from the 19th century. The idea originated in Germany where they have the Easter Hare (like a big rabbit but not a rabbit). Of course Hares don't lay eggs either but they do make nests (not burrows) to raise their young - a bit like some ground nesting birds. So there used to be a joke or tease (for children or gullible city folk) where you would show them a bird's nest on the ground with eggs and tell them it was actually a hare's nest and that hares lay eggs. The nest has morphed into the Easter Basket.
