  • Answer:

Was this an area of your specific responsibility? I don't know exactly what your job responsibilities are, but I do know loss prevention agents in other companies are responsible for doing their own internal audits to ensure the business is remaining compliant to policies and minimizing shrink. If you were responsible for checking logs and reporting inconsistancies and did not, then accept the warning and adapt so it never happens again. If you didn't think it was part of your responsibility, you should have an open conversation with your manager outlining your specific job description and responsibilities. Depending on what you find, you could use the documentation as an argument in your favor. Also, how are you certain your ops manager didn't get diciplined as well? Does your company discuss those matters openly with all the employees? A company with good discretion will keep all disciplinary actions between the individual employee and the manager(s) to which they report and no one else.

Verbal warning is just the first step in the disciplinary process, and as such, it is as big a deal as a written warning, which is the second step. Once a company starts documenting the disciplinary process, they are creating a paper trail to coverr their butts and show they followed proper procedures for your termination. If you disagree with the appraisal, put your response IN WRITING and submit it to the proper authorities. Stick to the facts, use the company handbook or polices and procedures manual to show that you did perform to the standards of the job. For a best result, you should concentrate specifically on your own issues, and not what others did or did not do unless it directly affected your ability to meet the responsibilities of your job.
