Why do we have eggs on Easter?

Easter-Why do we pretend that rabbits lay colorful eggs and what do rabbits and eggs have to do with Easter?

  • Now I have always wondered about why people pretend that rabbits lay colorful eggs and stuff, what do rabbits and colorful eggs have to do with Easter.

  • Answer:

Rabbits and eggs have nothing to do with Easter and everything to do with the pagan holiday Ostara (Eostre, Ishtar). The pagan holiday is a fertility celebration thus the fertile bunnies and representative eggs. Easter is just another holiday made up by Christians in order to convert pagans.

ok, the egg thing comes into it because christians roll eggs down hills on easter sunday, symbolising the stone that was covering jesus where he was put after crucifiction. painting the eggs was to get children interested. the rabbit came into it when corporate shills decided to lable and market every possible festival they could get thier grubby mitts on. hope this helps a little.

It's just fun for kids. Unfortunately for Christians, a rabbit hiding decorated eggs is just as real as their religious beliefs.

Hello again, You've had the stock neo-pagan answers (even from the odd misguided Christian) about supposed ancient pagan symbolism; stories actually invented in the 18th and 19th centuries. There is no historical evidence for any link from Christian Easter customs to any pagan religion. The date derives from the jewish passover, not paganism. The origins of these customs are not known with certainty but there is a large interval (centuries) between the demise of paganism and the emergence of the customs so they are most likely either rooted in Christianity or are simply folk customs with no religious root. The eggs can plausibly have a Christian origin in that eggs were traditionally not eaten during lent. Hence one could give a present of an egg to symbolise the end of the lenten fast at Easter. The bunny has no Christian link but was originaly a hare. The idea that hares might bring (or lay) eggs probably relates to the similarity between their nests and those of some ground nesting birds.

I am not sure how the bunny came about but the eggs got associated with Easter because the little cave or whatever where Jesus was had a rock covering the opening and the rock was shaped like an egg so that's why eggs are associated with easter but, again, I am not sure about the bunny... maybe you should check on wikipedia... the easter bunny hope this helps

Rabbits and eggs are pagan fertility symbols of extreme antiquity. Birds lay eggs and rabbits give birth to large litters in the early spring these became symbols of the rising fertility of the earth during the spring season. Since Easter also occurs in the early spring, people brought the beloved pagan symbols into the Christian celebration of Easter. These pagan symbols have become part of the Christian tradition. They do not take anything away from the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and they add to the celebration. Christianity has frequently absorbed the positive and neutral symbols of pagan religions while leaving the negative symbols behind, similar to Christmas trees and Halloween costumes. With love in Christ.

Back in the early days, pigs were considered a luxury among many and only the well to do could afford to have them. Families that had very little hunted for wild game instead to put on their tables for Easter. Rabbits were plentiful since they multiply quite rapidly during the Spring. So when the rabbit was served on Easter, it was known as the Easter Bunny. Because of their demeanor and cuteness, rabbits became household pets and kids like to dress them up in cute outfits and that's why they wear what they do today. As far as the eggs, they went well with the rabbit like they go well with ham.
