Why does the Easter bunny carry eggs? Rabbits don't lay eggs.?

It's left over from a pagan holiday from around the same time, celebrating the fertility goddess Eostre. The eggs and rabbits were symbols of fertility.

The egg is seen by followers of Christianity as a symbol of resurrection: while being dormant it contains a new life sealed within it. In the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches, Easter eggs are dyed red to represent the blood of Christ, shed on the Cross, and the hard shell of the egg symbolized the sealed Tomb of Christ — the cracking of which symbolized His resurrection from the dead. Easter is all about the death and resurrection of Christ :o)

What kind of children do you know that would willingly go out and look for carrots? I do not know too many that would. They would also be rather difficult to dye in festive colors. The goddess Eostre is a fertility goddess and her symbol is the hare (rabbit). Eggs are also a fertility symbol for obvious reasons, so the two are associated with the holiday that took its name from her in secular and Pagan traditions.

Fair point, but have you stopped to think what comes out of a rabbit that is brown and sort of egg-shaped, albeit small? You'll never think of chocolate eggs in the same way again.

Eggs are easier to hide. Also they are smaller
