Why do we have Easter bunnies?

Why do we have Easter Eggs and Bunnies at Easter - was Jesus really a bunny who hatched out of an egg?

  • Always wondered about this, I guess they could just be emblems of new life - a solidly Christian perspective, but I just don't know the reason that eggs and bunnies appear these ...show more

My Gods in Asgard... Okay... for about the 12th time, now, that I've answered this very same question... The name "Easter" is a corruption of the name "Eostre" which is the name of an Anglo-Saxon Spring/Fertility Goddess. Her companion is the Spring Hare. As a Spring/Fertility Goddess, there was a celebration for her called the Feast of Eostre during which depictions of hares were made in breads and cakes, and eggs (as a symbol of the very basis of life) were painted in spring colors. Christian missionaries sent to convert the European pagans co-opted the feast of Eostre and told the early pagans that this was a time of celebration for Christ returning from the dead. (Much like them co-opting Yule and telling them that the gift-giving was symbolic of Christ's gift to the world) It's one of those situations where if a lie is told often enough and consistently enough, people will start to believe it, so Easter was eventually (through many years of lying) thought to represent the resurrection. Pagan traditions live on, though, in the form of the Easter feast, bunnies and dyed eggs. The truth is hard to completely kill. Eostre is known as Ostara in Scandinavia.

It was a Pagan ritual that is still practiced today.Has nothing to do with the Bible.

Don't be silly! Easter is when Jesus comes out of his tomb. If he sees his shadow, we have 6 more weeks of Lent.

Dam good question. The Easter bunny has nothing to do with the resurrection of Jesus. It's another holiday that has lost its true meaning

The whole egg thing is the pagan part of it, having to do with fertility, etc...

It is to make it a little more fun for children.

Hmmm. It's almost as if the two are unrelated. Churches don't have bunnies and eggs, and bunnies and eggs rarely have crucifixes hanging around them. Maybe it is some sort of combination of two events that were intentionally intertwined? Maybe it's all a conspiracy to see who actually looks into things and tries to understand them vs. who just walks around asking stupid questions trying to catch unsuspecting Christians in lies that don't exist... We'll never know.

You just about answered your own question, it is really to symbolize new life, the egg, being the new life... just as Jesus left his tomb, a chick has to leave the shell of the egg, to be able to live! There are many things that are symbolic in ways that are hard to understand.. but also many things that are too commercial... to make a profit from these religious holidays... Jesus wasn't really here to be a Santa Clause either! But the gifts that were offered him at his birth, as well as the symbolism of him giving us the greatest gift of all, eternal life.. was dramatically overplayed throughout the years.... So, yes, it is some commercialism that makes us wonder what it is all about... but just remember that the true meaning of Easter & Christmas is all about Jesus... His birth, life, death and his ressurrection! That is what is really most important! :0)

The egg symbolizes the rebirth of Jesus through the resurrection. I don't know the real story on how the bunny got involved, but it is just for the little ones and has nothing to do with religion. Like any other aspect of teaching, you need to make it fun and interesting for the real message to stick with the kids. It's sort of like Santa though: at a certain point, if the kids haven't already figured it out, the parents will explain.
