What were your childhood traditions at Easter?

My mom would make this elaborate cake for dessert. She made the cake by slicing an angel food cake into 3 layers, tinting vanilla ice cream pastel green and flavoring it with peppermint oil, and then spreading the ice cream between the layers. She then froze the whole thing solid. While the cake was freezing, she made a little bird's nest out of a no-bake cookie recipe, substituting coconut for the rolled oats. After the cake was frozen, she frosted the cake with green tinted whipped cream and put green tinted coconut all over (to look like grass). Then she put the bird's nest in the middle of the cake and put some candy malted milk eggs in the nest. She completed it by placing two yellow peeps on either side of the nest, as if they were keeping watch over their eggs (although she usually used the bunny peeps for some reason). It sounds garish, but it was an awfully fun cake when we were little!

Since Easter is on Sunday, we went to Church, as we went to church every Sunday of the year. When we woke up though, there would be a nice Easter basket for each of us. We set out an empty basket the night before, with a carrot nearby, and in the morning the carrot was eaten and the baskets were filled! It was always fun, even when we realized that our parents were filling the baskets. We might have an easter egg hunt on the Saturday before Easter, in the backyard, or at the city park, but that had nothing to do with the actual Easter Basket full of candy that would appear on Easter morning. We would spend time talking about the religious significance of the day, and realized that the basket, bunny, eggs, and goodies were just for fun and a celebration of Spring as well. I think you can find a way to keep the secular and the spiritual side of Easter seperate from each other, but still fun. Mostly it was a family time, we would have a big Sunday dinner too, after church.

What about an easter egg hunt. When my son was small the Easter bunny always left him a chocolate egg in an egg cup.

well decorating colored eggs, and getting easter baskets.

Well, in my country, it depends of the weather. If the weather was sunny (which happens once every ten years) and as they are bells that drop eggs in our gardens, we went to look for the eggs (boiled and chocolate eggs) and once done, we found an Easter basket on the table. The basket was filled with chocolate, marzipan fruits and a little something that sometimes was bigger than little. If the weather is rainy (which happens every day of the year and every year), we received our Easter baskets as soon as we woke up. As for the church, we're catholic but do not practise, except my grand-mother. Here's a link that might be useful:

When I was little my parents would "hide" our easter baskets in the house. When we got up in the morning we had to find our baskets. They could be anywhere!! Mom and Dad would tell us if we were "hot" or "cold". We'd walk thru the house and Daddy would say "ohh-you're getting warmer" meaning we were closer to finding our basket. If we were standing right next to it (and couldn't see it) he'd say "oh you're red hot!!!" If we were in the wrong room he'd say "Oh you're ice cold". It was so much fun!!! Daddy would also buy the biggest solid chocolate bunny he could find--put it up high--and the first kid to spy it got the first chunk!! I did the same with my kids!!

Hunt for easter eggs and candy all over the yard, that was the fun part... he's little so he will dig it ... my kids are 5 and 7 but when they were little it was all about hunting the eggs and stuff... put wrapped candies so you can hide them too... I had a basket with stuff in in and hunted the candy down with the eggs ... pretty simple holiday really... candy, bunnies, eggs, trying not to eat any eggshell from the eggs we find and eat, mom always picked out any that got too gross from the hunting!

My mom would hide an easter basket somewhere in the house for my brother & I so first thing we'd look for it. Then we'd go to mass. Shortly after my grandparents, aunts, uncles & cousins would come over to eat. After we ate we'd do an egg hunt in the backyard. My parents would hide the eggs that we'd decorated earlier in the week. Some in plain site, some harder to find. If you do that, count how many you're hiding so you know if any are still out there at the end. I think it's great that you want to create a tradition for your son.

Your Easter Baskets were hidden filled. Mine always had a chocolate bunny, jelly beans, and peeps. We went to Sunrise Service (back when they were outside at sunrise) had breakfast at church and then came home. while home I looked for my Easter Basket and we got dressed up for church. After church was time with family and a family dinner it was one of those days when you know your picture would be taken with the relatives. I still treasure those pictures taken outside of my grandmother house over the years.
