Answer:
You might be able to grow cymbidiums outside there but it may get to cold in the winter for them. You could start by leaving one in a pot to over winter in a protected area. If it lives and flowers the following summer then you could put some in the ground. You would need to amend the soil small bark and perlite for extra drainage. There are other terrestrial orchids you could put outside including Bletilla, Ophrys, Orchis, and Platanthera. You are going to have to order online if you want any of these, local nurseries won't carry them. You probably are a fan of the tropical orchids like Phalaenopsis, Denrobium, and Oncidium. These types will not be able to live outdoors where you are and they are epiphytic, so they cannot be put in the ground. They are house plants in most areas of the USA. A good local nursery would be your best resource. Looks like Victorville, CA is zone 8B, which is too cool for the tropical orchids over the winter, but fine for many other species. Bletilla striata is a Chinese orchid that is easy to find and hardy here in Virginia zone 7- but Virginia probably gets a good bit more rain than "high desert". Orchids live on all continents except Antarctica- there are some hardy orchids that I can't grow because Virginia would be too warm for them (native to the upper Midwest and southern Canada). It's just a matter of figuring out which species will do the best in your conditions- and a knowledgeable local nurseryman or Master Gardener will be able to speak from experience.

Meijers, Walmarts, Lowes, Home Depot. Right now they all have them. I have seen prices of 16.00 at Walmarts, and very nice colors. I would hope they would be able to be transplanted outside as well. Since you live in an area where it seems like you would be able to plant them outside I would check local nurseries or greenhouses. Since I live in Michigan I am stuck with having them indoors only, but that's okay, they are still beautiful and easy to care for!
