  I have experienced something like this before. I think that when they say something like "we're still interviewing" or "we'll call you" and a whole week or more has already gone by, that means you probably did not get the job. In your case, I think they said that because they have probably already found someone or they're really still interviewing. They just don't have the heart to tell you because they don't want to feel bad. Just because they've done the whole process of checking backgrounds and references doesn't mean you're going to be a shoo-in for the job. That process actually determines if a certain person will be hired or not. It's not just because you got a second interview and you thought it went well. They might have not liked something from your background, who knows? Sorry, I'm not trying to make you feel bad. This is just what I think. Stay positive and good luck on your job search!
