How do I disable the Facebook share button?

How does a Facebook Share button increase the amount of stories shared compared to a permalink that you need to copy and paste in your status?

  • We are currently sharing events using a permalink and we are thinking of adding a facebook share button. But we are more interested in easy uncluttered interface rather than a heap of functionality. Is there a study out there showing how adding a facebook share button would significantly increase the number of shared stories?

  • Answer:

The Facebook Share button, unlike the Like button, is a critical component to triggering their algorithm (EdgeRank) and making sure more people see your post than they would if you had posted it or clicked the Like button. FYI: It's similar to how EdgeRank rewards photos over text posts or anything else. Facebook loves photos. If you're looking for studies, or better yet, case studies, look at Buzzfeed and Upworthy's use of the share button over the like button. A lot of folks who study this stuff won't comment on the record because they can charge upwards of $100,000 to large corporations for consulting on EdgeRank, so while it may be difficult to find raw data, I can tell you without any doubt, from my own experience and from what I gathered in interviews, that using the Share button instead of a permalink is the best way to go.* P.S. That's why, if you look at a lot of the "viral marketing" strategies online you kind of see the same thing written over and over. Nobody wants to talk about the stuff they do that actually works because it'd cost them money. Like the answer? Read the book: http://www.socialmediaisbullshit.com

I have not heard of any studies like that. There are so many factors, making it hard to find a definitive answer. Why not test it on your site? You could put the share button on some things and see how it compares. Remember variables like traffic, demographics, etc. should be considered. My opinion is that the Facebook share button does increase sharing. It is easier and faster for the user and more importantly acts as a reminder. Placement is very important as is the design and style to keep your site looking good. If all goes well be sure to add Twitter, Google+, and possibly LinkedIn.
