What is your opinion on being a chef?

I need a chef's opinion.?

    Your school will probably have a basic set of knives that you can purchase. I would recommend getting their knives. They won't be the best set in the world but they will have what you need for their course work and if you tear them up learning to sharpen them you won't have wasted your money. I would also not recommend spending a lot on knives before you figure out what you like. Some people like a heavy knife and others want a light knife. The size of your hands will also make a huge difference on the style of knife handle that is comfortable to you, but until you've spent some time cutting you may not really know what is comfortable. As far as lasting a lifetime no knife will.

I wish you all the best - tough choice for an occupation right now, unless you can go outside of the US; restaurants are hurting big time now...you may want to consider another line of work unless the school can guarantee job placement, which is unlikely

not 2 B fooled

Chances are good, your school is going to make you buy their knife set. Check out the FAQ section of your school's website, I'm sure they go over it there. School knives get banged around and abused anyways.
