What are the pros and cons of outsourcing Business Intelligence?

    The biggest consideration here is going to be the domain knowledge needed to work with the data. Most data is not useful unless you know quite a bit about it--that knowledge is going to be needed to build schemas and data mining knowledge, sanity check results and sample data, and execute on the business requirements driving the project. Typically this goes quite a bit deeper than a schema document--which you'll only have if you're REALLY lucky in the first place. That said, if your BI project is analyzing a well-known or extremely well-documented data set (say, http://salesforce.com data for example), then you may be able to outsource it. Otherwise you're pretty much stuck using someone with deep domain knowledge of the data as a central cog in the project and you won't be able to outsource the entire thing successfully.
