Steps in becoming a Chef?

Medical is mostly about education, cooking is mostly about experience. I know a guy who is a (somewhat) famous chef. He began his career by walking into a good restaurant in San Francisco and asking to work in the kitchen for nothing, just for experience. In six months he was a sous chef. He couldn't afford culinary school and didn't think it was necessary anyway. Its been about 10 years and he has worked in Los Angeles, Boston, and now he's in France for a while. From what I have seen, though, it is about the hardest work there is. Long hours, bad conditions, etc. I don't know how much he makes but I'm guessing it's not bad, since he got married and bought a house.

I will highly recommend you to go with a Medical career, cooking is something that you can do as a hobby or in your free time, I know that been a Chef is a really good but you can do both.

Cooks, including chefs, are generally low paid and do not receive benefits. They work weekends and holidays. The work is hot and often dangerous. The hours are insanely long. Read Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential and Michael Ruhlman's Making of a Chef, Soul of a Chef and Reach of a Chef. Get a job in a professional kitchen. You'll probably start as a dishwasher. Take a look at the profession from the inside.
