How long dose it take to become a chef or cook?

What Step Do I Take To Become A Chef/Cook?

  • By Steps, i mean education. Do i go to college or Culinary School?

  • Answer:

Stay out of cooking. It doesn't pay and it is high stress. When I started it paid well but now most cooks are lucky to make more than a couple bucks more than a dishwasher. Culinary school is way too much money. Go to a hotel school. Most of the cooks I know make under $10 an hour.

If you want to start today, begin by making dinner for your family at least once per week. Look up knife skills tutorials, get yourself a nice set of knives and start chopping every vegetable in every way possible. If you want to become a very good, very efficient chef, take the time to learn about knives as well as food. Keep your knives sharp always and you'll never get injured and you'll always be quick. Start of with softer vegetables, then work on onions. Dice an onion per day until you are amazing at it. Many high schools will offer Culinary Arts Programs. Education wise, start there. Your next step is to look for a college that offers a Degree in Culinary Arts. You want to be sure that they will award you a Bachelor's or Associate's degree - not only a Chef certificate. Johnson & Wales is one example as well as SUNY Delhi. The CIA will only give you a certificate.

You could take home economics in high school, then go to a culinary arts school that offers education on other subjects. Then make a buisness :)

It depends on what type of Culinary Arts you want to go into, Baking? Sous chef? Cafeteria? the list goes on. I know that you also will need some education in the culinary field from High School, like Caf 12 or Foods 11, then you should look into all colleges (culinary or not) and see what courses that they offer and check them out, each school is different and caters (get it? hahaha) to individual needs, Try also asking around at restaurants to see if the Head Chefs are offering internships, it'll look good on a resume and it gives you ah-mazing experience hope this helps!
