How would I respond to this job interview question?

How should you respond to a question about your weakness during a job interview?

  • Answer:

Interviewers ask these questions to see how you tackle tough situations. Give an honest answer and add a positive spin by explaining how you overcome the weakness. For example: "I used to have some problems with organization. So now I carry a schedule book around throughout the day and I also use this Palm Pilot to keep me on track. It's worked out great!" Always end on a positive note.

The weakness you mention should not be something that will have a major impact on your ability to do this job and if possible you should be doing something about it. Examples might be, that your keyboard skills are not as fast as you'd like them to be, so you have taken steps to attend an evening class to improve them. The idea is to show that having realised your weakness, you are now taking steps to improve. You could say you used to find it very difficult to deal with angry customers without taking things personally, however have learnt to concentrate on putting things right for them, and now understand that the anger isn't directed at you but is simply frustration. You could add that you are very self critical and always try to learn from your mistakes and endeavour not to repeat them and that although not perfect you don't think you have weaknesses that will impact on your ability to carry out this job. Only admit to one or two, and make sure you know what your strengths are, that these DO relate to your ability to do this job and that you have strong examples. Best of luck.

No one else can tell you what your weakness is. Only you can know that. So tell the truth. Are you forgetful, nervous, shy, perfectionist. Tell the interviewer. Then move quickly on to the next subject. Don't explain..

All the employer is looking for is to make sure you aren't crazy. What I mean is some people think they are perfect and cannot identify any flaws because they don't think they have any. I only know of Jesus to be that flawless and if His second coming has already happened, I wasn't made aware. So when you can take the time to know your strengths, do the same for your weaknesses. Here is the hitch, if you have more weaknesses then your strengths and have not a plan to improve yourself, they will think your crazy then too. So list one and have a plan to strengthen it.

You can tell what you have noticed you have weak areas and your plans to work in these areas. Mine was just doing my job well and soon the boss noticed my strengths that out weighed any weak areas. My self esteem got me through and it will you

You turn it around to be something good. Example: I always want everything to be perfect.

Make your weakness sound like a good thing. Tell them you don't like leaving unfinished work on your desk and can't rest until it's done !

Weakness? About what? My perfection? My setting a good example as often as I can? What kind of weakness? This is food service...so perhaps because you end up tasting lots of tasty confections? Okay...I am in over my head....
