What's it like to volunteer in a nursing home?

Volunteering at a nursing home will involve talking (conversations), feeding, reading to residents, and handing them things they want. Don't worry, they are not going to let you do anything dirty or anything that would put residents in danger (especially falls). It also depends on the facility and if they will let you into different units. But you have to remember that their needs are your first priority. Sometimes people in nursing homes have no one to talk to so it's extremely important for you to listen first. They do love to hear other people's stories so if you want to talk then that's a great place to do that. PS- if you decide to volunteer, ask someone to show you how to use a wheelchair, who to call, and NEVER touch blood, urine, feces or anything that looks dirty. It would be nice if you knew how to play cards or bingo (don't expect everyone to play because they are old so be careful, some may get offended). Many residents love crafts too ;]

yeah but you cant talk to them about depressing stuff. youre kinda trained into what you can ask and what you cant. if they voluntarily tell you about their past its okay. but you cant ask deep questions because "youre disturbing their peace". I volunteered at a nursing home and you have to be very careful. all they let you do is play like simon says with them and other stuff. if you need someone to talk to, find a friend?
