Are Medical Assistants really more in demand than LPN's?

  • I have heard that more Medical Assistants are getting hired for clinical jobs rather than LPN's. The pay for a MA is still pretty decent, I was thinking about doing the schooling.

    LPNs are often more highly valued by employers because they hold a state regulated license - not just a certification. Big difference that helps offer employers the reassurance of the quality of the individual they hire. LPNs typically make a few dollars more per hour. Their nursing education transfers towards an RN degree without taking extra courses and feeling like they are repeating things. MA courses do not transfer towards anything and it's considered a terminal career path, meaning you don't go on to school to become a higher level of MA like you can continue on as a nurse. IMO, too may for-profit allied health schools are filling desperate young people's heads with ideas that MA is such a great career path to choose with endless opportunities, and quite frankly that's BS. If all you aspire to do with your life is be an MA and never make more than $15-17 per hour, then that's great, but if you know eventually you will want more, then choose LPN.

Typical LPN should get paid more? In california it's MA $10-$12 a hr. LPN are $14-$18 depending on work setting. MA are in demand, but hard to find job. This is due to most places are seeking experience. LPN are harder to find job, but some hire on the spot. So answers vary. Personally I would go for LPN. But MA is your interest, do that. Whatever you are interested. All I can say is based on my research & my experience, MA have harder time finding jobs & don't get paid as much. Their salary are the same as a CNA??

Location, location location. MA jobs in my geographic location are not plentiful. And honestly, some of these private schools are charging tuition where you could have been an RN at the end of the day. More bang for your buck is my philosophy.
