Pharmacist or Nurse Anesthetist?

  • Answer:

I can't speak for Nurse Anesthetist, but I can however speak toward the pharmacy career. From my experiences working in a pharmacy it's probably one of the most unfulfilling jobs you can have. I say this because most of the large retail chains are outsourcing just about any task to the techs to the point where you just become a pill checker. The hours are long and the people you have to deal with are horrendous. Large retail chains like Walgreens can get 300-400 fills a day. It's like your entire life cycle is on repeat day in and day out within the confines of a small room. Honestly you should go out and either shadow each job or get some work experience to formulate your own opinion. From my own experiences however I'd say don't go into pharmacy unless you really evaluate the reasons in which you are pursuing the career. I can say that the salary is not worth the burnout that most pharmacists incur sometime in their career.

Well both are very different majors. However both fields have changed and you must get a PhD/ doctorate degree to be either a pharmacist or a Nurse anesthetist. Before you just needed a master's degree but both now require doctorate degree. So it means lots of college for both majors. A pharmacist stands all day, especially in retail. A nurse anesthetist does get to sit a lot, during the surgery. They sit near the head of the patient and administer drugs and monitor the patient during the whole surgery. So decide if you prefer a job where you stand most of the day and deal directly with people/customers (pharmacist) OR if you prefer to only deal with people who are asleep most of the time and deal with people one at a time (nurse anesthetist). Maybe ask a pharmacist at your local pharmacy if you can observe them for a few hours. Or go online and research both careers. I would guess that both careers make about the same money. Both are good, high paying careers.

I'd go with Nurse Anesthetist, because, thanks to Obamacare, Pharmacist is turning into a job of mechanical pill counter. It's like a production line, but if anything goes wrong who do you think gets the blame, not the Drug Store Chain, but rather you. Just visit your local drug store and see what's going on behind the Pharmacy counter.
