How to become a nurse in college?

How much debt will I be in after I complete college to become a registered nurse?

  • I was just wondering if there are any RN's out there that can give me an idea of how much debt I would be in. Also how long did it take you pay it off?

  • Answer:

How can we predict that? Are you not paying any tuition and planning on paying everything from loans? Are you only taking enough to cover tuition or extra to live off from while in school? How much is your tuition? Are you going to make payments on those loans while in school or not pay while you're in your in-school deferment? Average student loan debt is about $35k - for all students in all majors in all types of schools. You could have more or less. You could choose to take longer to pay it, or pay it off quickly by living frugally for the first several years working as a nurse. Regardless, as a nurse, your salary will be enough for you to pay for whatever you take out, even if you max out like I did. If you cannot afford to pay for them, then you're not budgeting well.

Tuition will be far less at a community college where you can get an associate degree in nursing. Next highest will be a state university if you want a BSN Some private colleges have nursing programs, but the tuition will be high. There are some hospitals that will help repay loans IF you agree to work for them for a period of time (3-4 years) These may be in big cities.
