  My philosophy is that no one is perfect. No one knows everything, and that is never the problem in life. The problem I feel is when individuals do not check when unsure of something (either by consulting with someone or looking information up in a nursing references/drug book), and then they make errors that could have been prevented. All medication errors are preventable.........if you look at the medical definition of medication error, the definition says all med errors are preventable. So these are not just little mistakes. Common sense is so important in life, and very important for those in the medical field. The individuals who make the best nurses in my opinion have the following attributes: (1) Common Sense (2) Ability to realize it is okay to ask questions when they don't understand something (3) Listen to Others (4) Not assume they know it all (5) Critical thinking skills The State Board of Nursing in my state even discipline nurses for situations that are not nursing related. I remember reading one case where a nurse's license got a censor because she was charged with child endangerment because her child was not in a car seat.
