You should consider being a registered nurse, its much more responsibility, and much more stringent education, but you should be able to make a middle income wage. Look into it. An LPN or sometimes they are called LVN s, make maybe two thirds of what RNs make . They do most of the work, have a lot of the same worries and concerns, and get a lot less pay. Rn pay is maybe 25 an hour to start in a busy hospital, and advancement is not really too limited. Its especially helpful to get a BSN nursing degree for advancement. Obviously, getting a masters degree in nursing should provide a real good earning power, but its a total of six year s additional school. With your experience in both the unit clerk and CNA, you are a shoe in for an r n s schooling. I found that people with either one of those experiences, did easily and well in nursing school with me, in fact, almost all rn s in training that are older than 22 when they start school have cna or lpn experience. Of course there are other medical professions, respiratiory and physical and x ray and occupational therapy that you could consider.

Medical assistant works in an OUTPATIENT clinic. There are so many private schools that are pumping out new grads, and many of them can't find a job (there are too many of them), and the standards are so low, as Simpson has said, some can't even tie their own shoes. If you really want to make enough to take care of your children, look around you and see what registered nurses do. then start here http://www.rn.ca.gov/careers/steps.shtml
