Can I get a masters degree in Nursing without an RN license?

  • I have a BSN in Biology and want to get an MSN in Nursing. Do I have to go to nursing school first and get an Registered Nurse license?

  • Answer:

I do believe so... I wouldn't let someone with less than that amount of school TOUCH me!

You will need a current and unencumbered RN license in the state in which you wish to study to enter into an MSN program. My suggestion. look up schools that offere Accelerated BSN/MSN programs like www.desales.edu. They will take your current BS, transfer in all of your previous coursework, and offer you nursing classes/clinical experiences to elevate your credentials to that of a BSN. From there you can sit for licensure and move onto their MSN program which (I believe) can also be pursued at an accelerated clip. Good Luck

Yes. Getting a masters degree has NOTHING to do with getting an RN license. One has to do with getting an education and one is a professional requirement. That is like saying that in order for a student to get a Masters in Accounting, they must first be a CPA.
