How do I become a Mental Health Nurse?

What qualifications do you need to become a mental health nurse?

  • I am planning on doing a psychology degree in uni next year, will this be enough? Or do i need another qualification as well. In the degree i will cover clinical and health psychology

  • Answer:

Do you want to be a mental health nurse or in psychology? A mental health nurse does not need a psychological degree. A BSN (bachelor's degree in nursing) would be a good move. There is nothing wrong with having experience in mental health but not from a university in psychology. There is specific training offered through continuing education in addition to job training. If you want to go deeper than a social worker or license medical social worker--somewhere in that area, then attend the univ. Please research "mental health nursing qualifications" for more info.

You need 5 GCSE's A-C to do a diploma in Mental Health Nursing or a couple of A levels to a degree but your degree won't hurt at all but be warned that you will still have to do a full 3 or 4 year nursing diploma/degree course anyway so it might be easier to do it directly.
