    Hello, To become an RN, you need to finish the degree requirements (2 years for ADN, or 4 for BSN). Once you graduate and complete all necessary requirements (such as taking NCLEX),then you can apply for a license with your state. Your school and employer usually helps you with those things. You can then often go back to school to get your NP, and sometimes your employer will even pay for it. http://www.rn.ca.gov/careers/steps.shtml First step first - the link above shows you about being a registered nurse. Info on NP is there, too (you'd have to do a search). It's a master degree level, but it's going to be a doctorate (of nursing) in a few years. Just don't think that you can actually introduce yourself to the patient as "doctor" - plainly because you are not a physician. You can't go to NP program right after you get your RN. According to the recruiter from UCLA, anyone with fresh RN degree (BSN only) / license will not be admitted to the NP program unless he or she has a "few" years working experience.

Nursing is a very difficult major to get into and yes you will get kicked out if you are not doing well enough. After a few years of nursing experience you can apply to an NP Masters program (2-3 years).In 2013 the requirement for NP becomes a PhD.
