Confused about my career.. Nursing?

I'm looking into nursing as a career but I'm confused about the various programs. Can you help?

  • I'd like to start out as a nurses aid in California. What is the minimum requirement? I've seen some schools which seem to imply that you only need a couple of classes and ...show more

jlee has the best answer so far, but I'd just like to add that if you are wanting to eventually be a nurse (LPN or RN), becoming a CNA is a good start however do not think that being a CNA is anything like being an LPN or RN. . . your responsibilities are so much different. You perform some of the same care tasks for patients like toileting, feeding, assisting them with personal cares, etc., but there is a much higher level of functioning for nurses (a CNA is not a nurse but an aide). CNAs often feel like they get the dirty work and get dumped on by the LPNs and RNs - but the fact of the matter is that this is what the CNA is qualified and hired to do - and the LPNs and RNs have the authority and responsibility to delegate these tasks to the CNAs because they have other things for which they are responsible. Some people really do not like working as a CNA but love being a nurse, because it's a different kind of work entirely. And as a nurse you have more opportunities to do things apart from regular direct patient care at the bedside. So what I am trying to say is, if you want to eventually be a nurse and find you don't like being a CNA, don't necessarily write off becoming a nurse. Good luck!

you mean a CNA? all they need to do is pass a certification test and then they are able to help nurses. not much training for a semester though.

I dont know much about california but i can tell u a few things, nurses aides dont go to school for long in most states it usually a few weeks to months to be certified. The 2 years programs you was talking about is probably a Lisenced Nurse program or a liscened vocational nurse program. Call your Board of Nursing or visit their site online just google California Board of Nursing.. Hope this helps you out.

For nurses aide, there is a six week program, which you learn basic skills in nursing, also you will learn CPR, you will also do clinicals either at a hospital or a nursing home to familiarize yourself working with people. You will then take a state test, which isn't really hard, common sense mostly. A nurses aide is a very very tough job at not all people can do it, they are the backbone of any facility, it is not hard physically, but emotionally, especially if you work with the elderly, it is also very fullfilling, just always remember, to be kind, and loving, these people deserve it. Good Luck
