You dont need to take additional courses to become a nurse, just the usual regular courses like chemistry, english, biology and etc (check with the university/college your applying to, but there is no specific course in highschool exclusively for nursing entry). Nursing is a very good job, if you are a hard working person. You can work in various field, acute, community, psychiatry, etc. Also there is room for advancements, such as academic advancements by being a professor at a nursing faculty, taking your masters/nursing practitionner license thus allowing you more scope of practice. Depending where you work and your level of education as a nurse, you can make as much as $60,000-$70,000 as a registered nurse. If you become a Nurse Practitionner you can earn at a more variable range but it can get as high as $100,000. Registered nurses(RN) are the "general" type of nurse who can work in various field with limited scope of practice. That is they can administer drugs, perform various patient care, and order some tests (very limited though). But they cannot diagnose illness and prescribe or medications. RN requires 4 yrs bachelors degree (there are shorter ones still existing out there, but they are being phased out, and honestly its better to have a degree coz you can advance father) and to pass a board exam. Nurse Practitioners are advance level Nursing, where you can diagnose, perform medical/surgical procedures, and prescribe medication. Usually takes an additional 2 years education to the 4 yrs bachelors of nursing degree. There is also Nurse Anesthetists who are also advance level nursing who perform Anesthetic administration on patients who need it (ie: in surgeries, labour&delivery, etc). They are also higher paid than registered nurse

One of the best things you can do. There is a great shortage of nurses. As our population ages the need grows more each year. Flexible shifts, plenty of overtime and from one residence you have a choice of twenty or so places you can work. Pay is above average and varies from one place to another. More education and more training directly increase your standing and income. Some hospitals have financial help for college. Most have good benefits, too.
