I have a associate degree in medical insurance billing & coding and I found out that you can make more money with it. It is up to you if you want to increase your salary to more education and more experience. Try to talk with your boss or someone at work can give you some idea. I am assuming that when you say "certified in medical billing/coding" you mean getting a national certification through AAPC or AHIMA. A degree is not a requirement to take any of the certification exams- either through AAPC or AHIMA. So it is not necessary. If you mean getting a certificate or associates degree in medical billing and coding, that depends. I would look at job openings in your area to see what employers are requiring of their applicants. If they require a degree or certificate, then that is what I would pursue. I would also take into consideration what your career goals are. If you want to advance and possibly move into management, then I would think about a certificate or degree.

No. You will be able to use your experience

NO a degree is not required. Many private schools offer training in billing/coding but jobs are not in abundance for this skill.
