How to become a Nurse Practitioner?

How do I become a nurse practitioner after getting my associates degree of nursing?

  • I'm in school to become a registered nurse, I want to become a nurse practitioner after that. What will it take?

  • Answer:

Steve D is almost right. The DNP isn't going to happen by 2015 and this has been acknowledged by the AACN. After you complete your ADN, you will sit for the NCLEX and then apply for your RN license. Once all that is taken care of, you return to school for the BSN. This can be done online and takes 18-24 months. Once you have completed your BSN, you can apply for the NP Master's program. As long as you have you NP degree by the time the DNP rule goes into place, you will be grandfathered in. If you are in NP school when the change is made, the school will instruct you as to what will be required of you.

You have to continue to go to school to go on to get your BSN. Then have that you go on to get yours masters degree to become a nurse practitioner.

There's a school that takes ASN/RN students straight into the Masters program ( IUPUI) but most prefer BSN then Masters, so look around

all above are correct.... EXCEPT - and this is the kicker: you'll need to be a RN for a few years before applying to NP school. Sure, you can apply right after earning your BSN, but they odds of any NP school accepting you without several years of experience are slim to none. Plus, you should want this as a future NP (all the experience you can get). if you can, i'd do a fast track program to earn your BSN, provided it's credentialed.
