  • Answer:

You don't get paid more money in EMS if you have a degree. None is required. You would get paid the same has someone who has a certification. If you want to be a Physicial Therapist, you will need at minimum a Masters and probably a Doctorate degree. The sciences you take are college level and not just the overview courses you would get even with an Associates in EMS. You will have to decide what you want to do. As already mentioned, it doesn't take long to get an EMT cert and you can volunteer. If you want to be a Paramedic, you will probably need to be a firefighter since most EMS systems are now fire based. Private ambulances do not pay well and there is no career ladder for you to climb except maybe to "shift supervisor" which isn't really much of a promotion.

I am not sure about the Bachelors part of your question but you have many options in terms of what you would do and where you would work with the Associates in EMT. If you are thinking about a higher paying position and career in the medical field you already have the ball rolling in terms of receiving that hands on experience which is priceless. You can also be very valuable if you were to work in law enforcement since you have more training and can be utilized in many different areas of the company.

Check college catalogs to find out what they offer. If you're confused about what you can do with this degree, talk to your counselor. When you finish your associate program, work in your field for a while to find out what you would like to do to further your knowledge.

Definitely a Associates in EMS is a great idea. Most EMTs and Medics do not take the time to get a degree. They get their license/certificate and are done. As for why to get a Associates degree, in our local area, you must have some type of degree to "climb the ladder" in an ems service. For instance, all shift supervisors, service directors, and coroners must have some type of degree. More education = more money if you have a higher level job. I have only known of one person who got their bachelors in ems and he was previously our EMS director. There have also been directors with associates degrees so really know reason (around here) to get a bachelors degree. Getting a Fire Science degree would be beneficial in many places, since EMS is directly part of the fire service. Here EMS and fire service is separate departments. Hope this helps.
