Do you have to be an LVN before you can be an RN?

Can you obtain LVN or RN license with a criminal record, such as a felony?

    Not usually. To be fair, it depends on what exactly your conviction is. If you are even accepted into a nursing program, the hospital/agency in charge or your clinicals/labs has every right to question your record, and refuse you placement. Meaning, you will not be allowed to complete your program. Only they could tell you for sure. In general (for good reason), anyone with a criminal record will have issues trying to get licenses in healthcare. Again, it depends on exactly WHAT your record contains. Stealing a car as a 14 year old rebel nitwit or getting caught with an ounce of weed is not the same as committing murder. You may have a chance, and you may not have any problems. But I think it's likely going to be an uphill battle. Some schools will not accept/place anyone with a record period. It's the price you pay for a high cost mistake. You may be able to work in medical transcription or a related field that doesn't involve direct patient care. Good luck to you!

I would check with the Board of Nursing in your home state. Before I spend the money on application fees for any programs.

Not sure, but I don't think you can get a nursing license with a felony record. Might depend on the State you live in. Go onto the website for your State - then find the licensing department for nurses on that site. There will be info there specifically for your state, or a phone number you can call and get that info.
