Actually, nursing homes aren't always depressing. There are residents there who are sad, but a lot of them are happy. All of them will appreciate someone who is cheerful and genuine. I work in home health and hospice, and some of my greatest learning experiences happened when I visited a nursing home to give a bath to a male patient (some of the nursing homes had only women CNAs, and the male patients often request a male CNA to bathe them). The man who I assisted had pretty severe dementia. He would almost always refuse to take a shower with me. But I learned to develop patience with him, and when I finally got him into the shower, he was so grateful. He told me what a great guy I was, and how sorry he was that he was mean to me. So despite how they may initially react to you, most patients genuinely do appreciate a patient and non-judgemental caregiver. But to answer your question, I would recommend applying to hospitals anyway. They say they want 1 year experience, but there are a lot of students in my nursing class (I'm in RN school) who got their first CNA job in a hospital. The situation for them was the same, the hospitals said they wanted experience, but they applied anyway and got a job. So keep at it. Another cool thing about working in hospitals is often they will train you to do skills that normally CNAs don't do. For example, they sometimes will train you to start IV lines, do digital stimulation (to dig out fecal impactions... fun stuff) or insert urinary catheters, which are both skills that usually nurses only do. I highly recommend home health and hospice. For one, the pay is better than in the hospitals, and often it's a little more mildly paced. You're constantly running as a CNA in a hospital. Sometimes with my home health patients, they'll be scheduled for two hours, but we get their personal care done in one hour, and then I spend another hour socializing with them and keeping them company. It's a lot of fun sometimes!

Most places that CNA work in aren't really considered cool. considering that a CNA takes care of ill and fagile indivduals. If you looking for work in a different type of setting that you generaly see CNA working then i would suggest maybe a childrens hospital, or a Dr office. You can find CNA jobs online at www.4cnas.com
