Whats the real difference between getting an AS in nursing or a BS in nursing....?

They both prepare you to take the NCLEX exam and then you become an RN. Besides getting paid more whats the difference between an AS in nursing and a BS in nursing?

Answer:
The difference is that you get extra general education and/or elective courses, and the additional nursing courses have a deeper focus on nursing theory, models of care, research, public health, and leadership / management preparation. The AS / ADN programs focus more on the specific skills and core competencies for the nursing profession, the bare-bones minimum you need to know to be a nurse. The BS gives you a deeper and broader perspective of the profession. You will have no trouble getting a job as a new graduate with only the AS / ADN degree. But to seriously compete for positions beyond staff nursing, such as supervisory, management, administrative posititions, you will definitely want to pursue the BS at some point, or better yet, a master's degree. I believe there are perfectly wonderful and capable nurses who only hold the lesser degree. Having the higher degree and that level of knowledge should, in theory, make you a "better" nurse, but there are some people who transcend that stereotype.

"Jill" has it right. In fact, I've read that in some states, AS-degreed RNs have to obtain their BSN without a certain period in order to retain their RN license.

The main difference is, there really isn't one. Its not really about what a BS can get you, but what you can do with a BS that you can't with an AS degree. I really need some clarification into why you are asking, in order to be able to help you. Are you looking at whether to enroll in an AAS (Associates of Applied Science) program versus a BSN (Bachelor's of Science in Nursing) program? If that's the case, then there are pros and cons with each. AAS RN programs aren't really that much different than BSN programs except for the amount of time that you spend in school. Both can become licensed nurses and work side by side in the hospital. Both are classified as RNs, and the amount of work that they do in the hosptial isn't any difference. The "only" thing that having a BSN over an AAS RN degree, is that you "might" be in a better position to become a shift supervisor than an AAS RN. So as far as the work that nurses do, there isn't any difference between an AAS RN or a BSN. If you are already an AAS RN and looking to go back to school for you BSN, that depends on what your long-term goals are. Getting a BSN will get you a bachelor's degree, but it won't change the job that you currently have as an AAS RN, and probably won't earn any more money. But, if you are planning on going on to get your Masters (either in Nursing or something else) you'll need to have a Bachelor's degree.
