What is the process to becoming an RN?

  • I am currently attending community college and next year will be earning a useless degree, an associates in liberal arts and humanities. I have taken a few classes, nutrition, ...show more

  • Answer:

Check out the 4-year colleges in your area. Many of your community college courses ought to be transferrable to a 4-year degree--you should not have to start completely from scratch. When you earn a BS in Nursing, you will have to take a Medical Board exam in Nursing, and serve a nursing internship at a hospital. The best thing to do is contact a couple of colleges and ask for information on their nursing programs AND find out if you can transfer some of your community college credits. Every school has its own specific requirements but the state medical board will have a general standard that all the schools need to meet. Good luck.

Well it depends on your state but I know you have to be a CNA and go to school for that. that really will get your foot in the door and then you and do that while you go to nursing school to provide you with an income while you are in school and your local community college may even have a nursing program either the 2 or 3 year kind and you can always get the one and work and the while you are working go for the next one and then you will not have to go as long at least that is the way it is in North Carolina

sir/madam: I have looked into this matter myself, and it is a two year associates degree which is not useless because there always seems to be a shortage in nurses. There are even some sign on bonus positions. Most Community Colleges have this program, my college has it. Nassau Community in Nassau County New York. Anthony Carlino

First I must say this is a very good profession you are trying to get into. Good luck There are two ways you can get your RN. one by getting a four year degree in a University which is the BSN program , second by getting your two year associate degree in a community college. The prerequisites for the four year program is more harder and challenging but, with determination and support you can make it. I will advice you not to work full time if you can, while in the nursing program. Some of us tried it once because we had no choice. In a two year Community college, you will be taking classes like psychology 150, 241 college Algebra , English 111,Anatomy etc. I must also say it depends on the college. You might want to talk to your college advisor. In a four year college, you need to take alot of classes including chemistry, Anatomy, statistics etc. I will strongly advice you talk to your college advisors so you will not end up taking classes you dont need..If you can, start working as a CNA while taking your classes. I have learnt alot from my nurses and there is nothing in a clinical setting that I can not do excluding IVS

Waaaaay back when I went to nursing school you had 3 choices. You could become an LPN with 2 years of nursing school. You could become an RN by going to a 3 year school or you could go to a 4 or 5 year college and get a Bachelor's of Science degree in Nursing. I got my BSN. I think they have done away with the 3 year programs. So now you can become an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) or an RN (Registered Nurse) - I think. The best thing for you to do is to talk the 4 year colleges in your area that offer nursing degrees. Every college has different requirements. Just about all the info you need can be found online. Just search for nursing degrees and then pick the schools near you. Good luck.
