Is it worth going to nursing school to become a physicians assistant?

  • i am striving to become a PA. i have good grades. The thing is i am having trouble deciding whether it is worth it to got through nursing school and then transfer to a PA program ...show more

  • Answer:

In my area, NPs and PAs are paid the same because they fall under the same category as a "midlevel provider" in the hospitals and the hospital groups. It may differ from physician individual preference when it comes to private practice groups. Is it worth it to go through nursing school for PA? No. PA focuses on medical diagnosis approach. If you want to become a PA, go into an easier degree like chemistry and find another way to get patient care hours. A lot of students struggle with nursing schools and if you are one of them, you can ruin your chance of getting into a PA school. If you go the RN route, it is better to become a NP simply because you can put your previous experience to use.

Forget the nursing. Just don't do it. Go to PA school.

You can (there is no law saying you can't) go through nursing to become a PA (and you do not transfer, you have to apply), but you would probably be more competitive with a pre med course of study than a nursing one for PA school. And neither is better, they can be similar or they can be quite different, depending on the position. One deciding factor, is do you want to be a nurse? Because you will be taught to be a nurse & work for one for awhile; even NP training continues many of the same nursing philosophies. If you want to be more scientifically trained and oriented and prefer the medical model, then your should become a PA. If you decide to be a PA, look into an undergrad program in an allied health field: lab, paramedic, respiratory, etc for experience , on one post bacc. You should firm up your goals as more NPs are found in some areas and more PAs in others, so the area my influence what you want to become as well. You should also shadow both and talk to both. And the person who thinks pre med is easier than nursing school, has no idea.

I'm not sure, and I haven't heard of anyone doing that. What I have heard of is people starting with their Associates of Applied Science, Nursing (RN) Degree, and then going on to obtain their BSN or MSN, CNA (Certified Nurse Anesthetist), or CR NP (Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner). The latter three I mentioned are on par with a Physician's Assistant Degree (Masters Degree). Though your job description and training would be different, the pay and level of autonomy would be similar
