Are there any free online medical billing courses?

Are there any free medical billing and coding classes or courses online that i can take?

  • i wanna try one of those 3 week courses and try to get a job. but i don't want to pay for a class.. are there any free classes?

  • Answer:

NO! In the first place you couldn't possibly learn billing and how to code in 3 weeks. You can either go to a local public college and take those and other required courses that may take 2-3 yrs or go to a private college or institution and take an excellerated course which is usually 9 mo. to 1 yr and pay anywhere between $4000 to $6000. You not only need to take billing and coding of ICD-9 but also coding of CPT-4, anatomy and physiology, medical terminolgy, typing, computers and a few other courses. Call around for local schools who teach such courses and educate your self and then go online to FAFSA and try applying for a government loan to help put you through school. It takes a lot of study and determination to get though these course, but if you are willing to put out for it, it may be worth it to you.

One of the main groups that certifies coders is the AHIMA. They offer courses but they will take months and cost thousands. Those three week ones are a scam; don't waste your money.

I have a degree, certification and several years of experience in medical billing, 1 year in coding and can't find a job. The area I live in is very rural and the only local facilities hire locals....so.....I have had to take a job outside of my area of expertise. There is no way a three week course would be of any benefit to you. Save your money, go to school and/or get certified by AAPC or AHIMA and work your way into a coding position. I have even looked into a remote coding position since the opportunities are not here and they want at least a CCS or CPC with 2-3 years experience before they will even talk with you. Therefore, my plan is to work with what I have and obtain my CCS and hope for the best.

There are actually not supposed to be too many jobs in medical billing or coding (or medical assistant) despite what those private $$ schools say. My cousin actually just got laid off of her job in medical billing of 5 years. If still wanting training, please go to a more affordable schools such as through the county vo-tech school or community college (perhaps non credit course). For medical coding, the field usually wants the worker to have gotten at least a few years experience doing coding tasks and certification(s) from an accredited program within the industry.

I am not aware of any FREE courses, and true-it would be difficult to learn all aspects of Medical Billing and Coding in 3 weeks--however, I disagree with the other posts regarding NO jobs--there are MOST DEFINITELY medical billing and coding jobs out there!!
